How to Make Tabs in GIMP

The open-source graphics program GIMP puts its vast assortment of tools at your fingertips with the creation of tabs. Each tab represents a separate tool and allows you one-click access to the features you need. These tabs may reside on one or several windows, which may be positioned independently of the main program and the images you edit. Once created, tabs may be consolidated into a single window, or section of a window. This allows you utter flexibility when creating your workspace.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open GIMP.

    • 2

Click "Windows," "Dockable Dialogs" and select the tool you want to use. This creates a new window with the tool occupying its only tab.

    • 3

Click the tiny arrow button, located at the top right of the window, point to "Add Tab" and select a tool. This adds that tool as a new tab in the floating window.

    • 4

Click and drag a tab into another window to relocate it there. Alternatively, drag the tab to the bottom of the second window and release your mouse button when the bottom border turns blue; this creates a new section in that window, with the selected tab occupying the only tab.
