Snowflakes conjure up images of frosty winter days, cozy fireplaces, peaceful winter countrysides and family get-togethers. Hang crocheted snowflakes in the window, attach them to curtains, or string them together along the front of a mantelpiece to create the ambiance of winter.

  • Size 0 crochet hook
  • Towel
  • Dressmaker pins
  • Laundry spray starch

Instructions

      Make a slip knot on the crochet hook. Chain five. Join with a slip stitch to form a ring. Stitches for the next round will be worked around the ring.

      Round 1: Chain one. One single crochet, then chain three. Two single crochet, chain three. Repeat two single crochet, chain three four times. Slip stitch into starting chain. There will be six chain-loops around the circle.

      Round 2: In the first chain loop, chain one, one single crochet; chain three, two single crochet. In each of the remaining chain-loops, work two single crochet, chain three, two single crochet. Slip stitch into the initial chain one to join.

      Round 3: Slip stitch into the first chain-loop. Then work one single crochet, chain three, one single crochet, chain five, one single crochet, chain three, one single crochet, chain two. In each of the remaining chain-loops, work one single crochet, chain three, one single crochet, chain five, one single crochet, chain three, one single crochet, chain two. Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join the round. Cut the wool and feed the end through loop on the crochet hook. Remove the hook and weave the end through the stitches.

      Fold the towel to make a thick pad. Lay out the snowflake and put a dressmaker pin at each of the six points. Stretch out the snowflake if necessary to get six distinct points. Stiffen the snowflake by spraying it lightly with laundry spray starch. Let the snowflake dry completely before removing the pins.

Tips & Warnings

  • Changing the thickness of the wool and the size of the crochet hook will change the size of the finished snowflake.

  • Use a white glue/water mix as stiffener.

  • Add beads or sequins to the snowflake for a bit of sparkle.
