How to Hide a Tail in Crochet

Crocheting is a relaxing hobby that has the added bonus of creating beautiful items. At the end of a crochet project securing the last bit of yarn will become necessary. If the yarn isn't properly secured, the entire project will unravel. After cutting the yarn, a tail will remain. This tail must be secured to prevent unraveling and it must be hidden so that the crochet will look attractive. Most crochet instructions state the words "finish off" or "end off" at the end of the project, but fail to provide instructions on how to do this. The process of hiding tails in a crochet is simple.

When the crochet has been finished, make the last stitch using a slipstitch. Make a slipstitch by inserting the hook under the last two loops that were made in the project. Bring the yard over the top. Pull the yarn through the chain stitch and the loop on the hook in one movement.

Cut the yarn, leaving a 5 to 6 inch length. This length is called a tail. It is important to wait until the very end of the project to hide all of the tails. If the tails have been cut off too short, it will be impossible to secure the yarn and the crochet will eventually loosen

After cutting the tail, gently pull to remove the last loop that was created during the slipstitch. Pulling on the slipstitch will create a secure knot at the point where the loose end of yarn connects to the crocheted item.

Use any blunt tipped needle to weave the tail back into the crochet. Weave the tail up and down into the adjacent stitches. This will secure and hide the tail. Weaving the tail into the project is the only time that yarn should be woven into a crochet project. Weave the yarn into an area of the crochet that is the same color as the tail to preserve the attractiveness of the crochet. If the edges will be sewn into a seam, weave the yarn into the edge. Alternatively, if the project will not have any seams, weave the yard into an area of the crochet where it is less likely to be noticed.

Check the rest of the crochet for any more tails. If there are any more tails, hide them in the same manner.
