      Pour some primer into your paint tray and roll your paint roller into it.

      Paint the entire bookshelf with primer and let the primer dry. The primer ensures a better hold for the paint. Otherwise, the paint will easily peel off.

      Paint the back of the bookshelf one color. For an added creative touch, consider stenciling or gold leafing as well. You'll probably need three coats of paint, so plan on stenciling or leafing the third coat.
