How to Make Bubble Wrap Footballs

How to Make Bubble Wrap Footballs thumbnail
Bubble wrap is an unusual craft material.

Bubble wrap is most commonly used as a packing supply, but for the 11th Annual Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day in 2011 the Sealed Air Corporation proposed several football-themed uses before the upcoming Super Bowl. It doesn't have to be Super Bowl Sunday to make a bubble wrap football. A football made from bubble wrap makes an unusual table centerpiece for a football party. Or take advantage of the cushioning, give it to your children, and let them play ball in the house for once.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a football shape out of one sheet of bubble wrap. Trace the cut football shape onto three more pieces and cut three more footballs. Set the scraps aside.

    • 2

Place one football piece smooth side up on a flat surface. Add glue along the top edge, point to point, of the football.

    • 3

Match the top seams of the smooth side of a second piece to the first piece. Press the pieces together to glue them along their top edges.

    • 4

Fold one of the unglued smooth edges open. Add another line of glue along that side and align a third football piece with it. Press and glue the third piece in place. Continue by gluing the fourth piece in the same manner, leaving one set of open edges.

    • 5

      Let the glue dry.

    • 6

Turn the football inside out until the smooth side is facing outwards. Use the scrap pieces of bubble wrap to stuff the football.

    • 7

Tuck one open edge under the remaining open edge. Glue along the inner edge and press to seal shut.

    • 8

Cut a 3-inch wide strip of bubble wrap from the remaining 12-inch piece. Fold the strip in half and cut and then fold each half in half and cut again. You will have four 3-by-3 squares.

    • 9

Spread glue along the smooth side of each square. Roll each square up into a tube shape.

    • 10

Space the tubes a half inch apart along the seam of the football and glue in place to make the laces.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use paint, glitter or glitter glue to decorate your football with your school or team colors.
