A smile indicates that you are enjoying yourself.

Although it may seem unfair, people may often judge you before they even hear you speak. When you walk into a room, people automatically form an opinion about whether or not you are friendly. The way you dress and how well you are groomed contribute to first impressions; however, the signals you send with your body language play a major role in a person's first assessment of you.

Instructions

    • 1

Walk confidently into the room --- with an easy stride --- and exhibit good posture. Stand up straight, pull your shoulders back and hold your head up. Do not cross your arms and do not put your hands on your hips, as these positions may convey to others that you feel superior or that you are arrogant.

    • 2

Greet others with a firm handshake. This exhibits confidence, whereas a weak handshake indicates lack of confidence.

    • 3

Avoid nervous fidgeting. Do not twirl your hair, touch your face or make excessive hand gestures because this type of movement indicates that you are jittery. Stand in a relaxed position with your hands at your sides.

    • 4

Smile to show that you are comfortable and that you are enjoying yourself. A smile shows confidence and makes you more approachable to others.

    • 5

Make eye contact with everyone. When people feel uncomfortable, they often do not look people in the eye. Make eye contact to send the message that you are confident, secure and interested in meeting people.
