How to Make an Afghan With a Loom

How to Make an Afghan With a Loom thumbnail
Use a knitting loom to make an afghan for yourself or as a gift.

A knitting loom may seem like something that would be limited by its size, but in reality with a little bit of creative thinking you can use that loom to make a variety of objects in several sizes. Use fewer than all of the pegs on the loom, for instance, to make something small. Use a round loom in a back and forth motion to make something flat. Use a long or round loom to make an afghan with a few additional piecing steps, and you'll be cozy all winter long.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the tail of the yarn around the anchor peg three times. The anchor peg usually sticks out of the side of the loom instead of being on top with the rest of the pegs.

    • 2

Wrap the first peg on the loom, immediately up and to the right of the anchor peg (or the farthest peg on the left, depending on the type of loom you have). Wrap this peg in a counter-clockwise direction so that the yarn moves as if it were writing a lower-case letter "e."

    • 3

Wrap each subsequent peg as you did with the first. Move from left to right across the loom or clockwise around it, depending on whether you are using a straight or round loom. Stop at the last peg.

    • 4

Wrap the loom pegs going back in the opposite direction. Still wrap each peg in a counter-clockwise direction, but move back right to left or counter-clockwise around the loom as you go from peg to peg.

    • 5

Knit the first row of stitches. To do this, start with your first peg and lift the lower loop up and over the peg from the outside to the inside and drop it. Repeat this with every peg across the loom.

    • 6

Wrap each peg once more, then knit another row of stitches. Repeat this process until the piece is a long strip. Stop at the length you want the afghan to be.

    • 7

Bind off this piece. To do this, with only one loop left on each peg, lift the loop up and over peg 1 to peg 2. Lift the bottom loop of peg 2 up and off as if to knit a stitch. Lift peg 2's loop up and over to peg 3. Knit another stitch. Repeat this until you are down to your last loop. Cut the working yarn, leaving a 10-inch tail. Pull this tail through the last stitch to secure it.

    • 8

Repeat Steps 1 through 7 to make more strips for the afghan. When you have enough for the afghan's desired width, use the yarn tails and an embroidery needle to sew the strips together into an afghan.

Tips & Warnings

  • Alternate colors for each strip to make a striped afghan, or keep them all the same for a solid color.
