How to Get Sound to Work on a Ventrilo Microphone Headset
A headset equipped with a quality microphone is generally the most optimal device for voice communication over the Internet. If you would like to use a headset with the Ventrilo voice program, configure the volume of your microphone to an appropriate level suitable for your new device. Get the sound in Ventrilo to work properly with your headset by configuring the device in the Microsoft Microphone Setup Wizard, and by ensuring the Ventrilo software is set to use your hardware.

Connect the green plug to the "Audio Out" port on your computer, and connect the pink plug to the "Microphone" port.

Click "Start." Type "Headset" and press "Enter." This runs the Microphone Setup Wizard.

Click to select the radio button next to "Headset Microphone"; then click "Next." The following dialog provides you with tips on proper microphone placement. To prevent breathing directly into the microphone, avoid positioning it directly over your mouth. Microsoft recommends you position the microphone approximately 1 inch from either corner of your mouth.

Click the "Next" button at the bottom of the placement tips dialog. This takes you to the automated volume adjustment screen. Read the provided sentences, and click "Next" then "Finish."

Click "Start." Type "Ventrilo" in Search and press "Enter." This opens the Ventrilo application. Click the "Setup" button located on the right side of the program. This opens a new window.

Click the "Voice" tab. Select the "Default DirectSound Device" option on both the "Output device" and "Input device" drop-down menus, and then click the "Apply" button at the bottom. Your microphone headset is now properly configured for use on Ventrilo.
