Instructions

    • 1

Chain 12. Loop the yarn over your hook and insert the crochet hook in the third chain from your hook.

    • 2

Grab the yarn through the back of the foundation chain and pull a loop through the chain. You should have three loops on your hook.

    • 3

Yarn over once more and pull the new loop through all three yarn loops on your hook. This completes one half double crochet stitch.

    • 4

Make nine more half double crochets in the remaining foundation chain stitches. Counting the two skipped chains as your first half double crochet, you should have 11 stitches in your first row.

    • 5

Chain two and turn your work. Skip the first half double crochet from the previous row and make 10 half double crochets for the second row. You should have 11 half double crochet stitches with the inclusion of your turning chain.

    • 6

Crochet rows of 11 half double crochet stitches until the piece fits snugly around your head and the ends of the headband barely overlap.

    • 7

Chain two and turn your work. Skip the first stitch of the previous row and make two half double crochets over the following two stitches. Chain one. Skip one stitch, then work three half double crochets in the next three stitches. Chain one, skip one stitch and work three more half double crochets in the last three stitches of the row. This completes the buttonhole row.

    • 8

Chain two. Skip the first stitch from the previous row and work half double crochets in all remaining stitches and chain spaces. Fasten off and weave in your yarn tails.

    • 9

Wrap the headband around your head with the buttonholes laying on top of the starting end of your piece. Mark where the buttonholes line up to align your buttons correctly using two stitch markers.

    • 10

Sew the two buttons over the marked stitches. After tying off your thread, make a running stitch along the back of your headband before clipping the thread.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can work crocheted edgings after the headband is complete. Edgings can be as basic as working a row of single crochet in a fuzzy yarn around the edge of the finished headband, or more elaborate pattern stitches in contrasting yarn colors.

  • You may use two or more colors for this project to create a striped headband. Simply use different colors on alternate rows for a more colorful piece.

  • Try crocheting in the back loops of previous rows for a monochromatic stripe. This technique will create ridges between the rows of the completed headband.
