How to Deal With Opinions

How to Deal With Opinions thumbnail
Talking about opinions can prevent arguments.

Even the politest people will eventually come across opinions that differ from their own, oftentimes strongly. Whether these are opinions about yourself or about hot topics -- such as politics or money -- it can be difficult to deal with others' opinions in a productive and polite way. By keeping a few objectives in mind, however, you can deal with opinions without being either too forceful or too docile.

Instructions

    • 1

Listen to what the other person is saying. By understanding each word the speaker is using, you can better gauge the appropriate reaction; for example, if the speaker uses inflammatory language and harsh words, you will know that they are vehement in their feelings and will need to respond with care.

    • 2

Wait a moment before responding. Stay calm and consider the other person's ideas, as well as the situation in which you find yourselves. For example, in a debate, you should respond in a logical and reasonable manner, while at a dinner party, you may choose to change the subject altogether. As you consider the person's words and tone.

    • 3

Respond objectively. Emotional arguments, especially those phrased negatively, will only inflame the discussion and make it harder to deal with opinions. Use facts where appropriate; for example, if you are discussing a political argument, refrain from inflammatory language and bring in concrete facts to keep the discussion on civil terms.

    • 4

Keep your objectives in mind. Your own objectives will depend on your surroundings and the situation of the discussion. Sometimes, dealing with opinions in the proper way will involve changing the subject so as not to offend those around you, while you will have to respond with an equally strong response in others. You might consider setting the other person's opinion aside for the moment and changing the subject, considering it on your own time when you have more of an opportunity to reflect.
