How to Make a Mourning Veil
Mourning veils are important visual displays of grief and suffering. Veils are traditionally worn by women and girls during viewings and funeral services. The mourning veil is black in color and designed in a simple and tasteful manner. Wearing a mourning veil is an indication of honor and respect for the departed. While they are not required apparel, making a mourning veil is a straightforward process and wearing one is a strong, nonverbal display of sad emotions and loss.

- 12-inch-by-12-inch black Russian netting
- Scissors
- Black thread
- Needle
- Iron
- Ironing board
- Hot-glue gun
- 3-inch black comb
- 4-inch black plastic flower
- 2-inch burgundy plastic flower

Spread out a 12-inch-by-12-inch piece of black Russian netting on a flat surface. Slice 2 inches from the top right corner of the netting with a pair of scissors. Slice 2 inches from the bottom left corner. The netting will now resemble a hexagon.

Thread the needle and black thread through the outer edge of the netting, making your way around the entire perimeter of the netting. Pull the thread tight to create a bulbous shape with the netting. Wrap the free end of the thread around the bunched netting end four or five times. Double knot the threading and cut of the extraneous thread.

Preheat an iron to its lowest setting possible. Iron the bulbous end of the netting into a flat shape. Flip the netting over and iron the opposite side. Run the iron over the face of each side only two or three times to prevent the netting from melting.

Fan out the bunched up end of the netting to a 3-inch diameter. Hot glue the 3-inch netting end to the underside of the black comb. Hold and press the netting with firm pressure for 30 seconds to secure the bond.

Glue the top side of the come to the underside of the black flower. Hold and press the comb with firm pressure for 30 seconds to secure the bond. Center and bond the burgundy flower to the top of the black flower with glue.

Slide the veil comb into your hair. Fold the netting down over your face.
