How to Make a Bongo Head

Bongo drums are one of the most traditional varieties of drum and are found predominantly throughout Latin music. Although the materials have changed in their construction, the method of stretching a piece of animal skin across a hollow drum is still the best way to create an authentic sounding bongo drum.

Things You'll Need

• Goat or cow Skin
• Bongo drum shell

Instructions

1. Soak the goat skin in lukewarm water until it becomes pliable. This will take between two and eight hours depending on the thickness of the skin.

2. Place the skin on a smooth flat surface and allow to dry for one minute.

3. Place the center wire, the round wire that holds the head in place, on the skin. Fold the excess skin around the wire.

4. Place the counter hoop (the rim) over the center wire. The drum head should fit snugly over the wire.

5. Attach the drum lugs to the drum head. This is accomplished by placing the hook over the edge of the rim.

6. Place the entire assembly on top of the bongo shell. Tighten the screws with your fingers. Do not tighten the screws with pliers or a drum key at this stage of assembly.

7. Cut off any excess skin hanging off of the outside rim. To accomplish this, smoothly guide your utility knife around the outside of the counter hoop (the rim). Be extremely careful during this stage that you do not cut the head of the drum as it will ruin it.

8. Allow the drum to dry overnight. Only attempt to tighten it further after it feels dry to the touch. This may take up to 48 hours. Once dry, tighten the lugs with a pair of pliers or a drum key until you reach your desired tuning.

Tips & Warnings

• Some Bongo players prefer to moisten the skin with water before they play. This will help the longevity of the bongo head.
