How to Create Vector Graphics in Illustrator CS3

Adobe Illustrator CS3 is the Adobe drawing and vector graphic editing software product. When a drawing is created in Adobe Illustrator, the drawing is created as a vector graphic by default. The default file type in Illustrator is AI, and the AI file is a vector image file. Therefore, to create vector graphics in Adobe Illustrator CS3, simply create a drawing and save the drawing as the default AI file type. A vector graphic, unlike a raster graphic, does not vary in quality when resized.

      Open the Adobe Illustrator application. A blank image, along with the Adobe Illustrator tools, display.

      Create a drawing using the drawing tools in the Toolbox. Click the Shapes tool to create a shape on the blank canvas. Click the Pen tool to draw vector lines, or lines including paths. Click inside the document at the location where you would like to place text and click the "T" button. The Text tool opens.

      Click the File option on the top navigation bar and select Save.

      Type a name for the vector graphic in the "File Name" input box and click the "Save" button. You have created a vector graphic in Adobe Illustrator.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can import a raster graphic, such as a JPG or GIF, into Adobe Illustrator and then place a transparent layer on top of the graphic. Trace over the lines in the raster image using the Pen tool to recreate a raster graphic as a vector.
