Costuming a Broadway-style show begins with a costume plot. A costume plot is a spreadsheet or table that organizes which costume each character will wear for every scene. Although individual costumes may be made especially for a show, many are rented. Some companies will rent to individuals as well.

1. Determine which costumes are needed for the production or event. A costume plot will help organize the costuming portion of the show and will aid the costume company in providing exactly what you need. See the Resources Section for a database of costume plots available to the public.

2. Contact a costume rental company that specializes in Broadway quality costumes. If you need a costume for a party or event, find a company that will rent to an individual. Most companies will ship costumes wherever they are needed. Some companies request that you make an appointment either in person or by phone. 3. Provide the rental company with your costume plot or list of needed items. Be as detailed as possible since they have props and accessories as well. This will help you in creating the entire costume without having to find props at the last minute. Some companies may already have a sample costume plot for the show you are doing.

4. Sign a rental agreement and pay for the costume rental. Most companies will require a deposit or payment in full. You will also be responsible for any damage to the costumes.
