How to Do a Grub Stitch Rose
A grub rose, sometimes called a bullion rose, is an embroidered flower. The rose is made from straight lines of ribbon sewn into the fabric like traditional embroidery thread. You can make grub roses of any size, but the smaller flowers look more realistic and hold together better over time. Make the roses all one solid color, or use different colors for the center, inner circular and outer edge of the design.

1
Position the fabric inside the embroidery hoop. Make sure the fabric is tight inside the hoop.
-
2
Draw the outline for the rose onto the fabric with the fabric pen. A grub rose is made up of small, individual lines. The center is made of three or four lines of even lengths. Around the center are five lines in the shape of a pentagon. Around the pentagon are seven straight lines positioned in a circular pattern. If you want to make a bud, draw three straight horizontal lines in a "V" shape pattern. Make the first line, at the top of the "V" shape, about 1 inch long, the second line about 1/2 inch long and the third line 1/4 inch long. The lines should be centered to form a "V" shape. Around the "V" draw two diagonal lines on either side of the "V" shape.

4
Stitch the outline with the ribbon. Use one stitch per line on the design. Tie a knot in the end of the fabric when you are finished with the design.

5
Sew a row of straight ribbon stitches coming off of the base of the roses to make vines for the flowers.
