How to Crochet a Dress Yoke thumbnail
Make a simple dress yoke and attach it to a plain dress, creating a whole new look.

Yokes are delicate, lacy pieces of fabric people attach to the top of shirts, dresses, camisoles and nightgowns. Yokes come in many different shapes. People crochet them in round, square, ruffled, V-neck or other patterns. Crocheting one of these decorative pieces is simple, and only requires a few hours of time. Anyone is capable of making a simple yoke, and attaching the yoke to a piece of clothing. This yoke has a simple round neckline, and only uses a few basic stitches for completing the project.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the yarn around the crochet hook, and catch the yarn on the side facing the yarn skein. Pull the yarn through the yarn wrapped around the crochet hook. This puts the first loop on the crochet hook.

    • 2

Catch the yarn on the side facing the yarn skein, and pull it through the loop on the crochet hook. This makes one chain stitch. Make 59 more chain stitches.

    • 3

Slide the crochet hook through the first chain stitch, and catch the yarn on the side facing the yarn skein. Pull the yarn through the stitch and the loop on the crochet hook. This makes a slip stitch. The slip stitch holds the ends together, and forms the first row of the yoke.

    • 4

Make two chain stitches. Wrap the yarn around the crochet hook, and slide it through the chain stitch closest to the slip stitch. Catch the yarn facing the yarn skein, and pull it through the chain stitch. Catch the yarn facing the yarn skein, and pull it through two loops on the crochet hook. Catch the yarn facing the yarn skein, and pull it through the remaining stitches on the crochet hook. This makes a double crochet stitch.

    • 5

Put a second double crochet stitch in the same chain stitch. Alternate putting two double crochet stitches and one double crochet stitch in each chain stitch in row one. Slip stitch the first and last stitch together. This finishes row two. Repeat this procedure for the next three rows.

    • 6

Chain seven stitches, and make a slip stitch in the top of the third stitch in the last row. Continue making seven chain stitches, and slip stitching into the third stitch from the last slip stitch all the way around the row. This makes a delicate lacy edge.

    • 7

Cut the yarn four inches away from the last slip stitch on the side facing the yarn skein. Pull the cut end of the yarn through the stitch, and pull it tight. Weave the left over yarn into the finished stitches using the crochet hook. This finishes the yoke.

Tips & Warnings

  • The finished neckline of the yoke described in this project is 20 inches. The finished neckline is the length of the first row. If you want it larger, add stitches to the first row. If you want it smaller, remove stitches from the first row.
