How to Edit Text Templates With Dreamweaver CS5

Dreamweaver, part of the Adobe CS5 or Creative Suite version 5, offers Web page builders a way to design their site from the ground up, completely from scratch. But time-savvy designers can also take advantage of Dreamweaver's ability to host templates, already-created pages they can then make their own. Open and edit text templates in Dreamweaver CS5 to transform someone else's text work or a previous version of your own and update it to fit your site's requirements.

Instructions

    • 1

Start Dreamweaver CS5. Click the "Open" link under "Open a Recent Item" in the left side of the splash screen. Browse to the text template to edit and double-click the page file name.

    • 2

Click the "Design" button under the tab with the page name in the top-left corner of the workspace. This button may already be selected if you last used it while working with the template.

    • 3

Highlight the first part of the text template to modify, such as the page title or a header. Click to open the "Property Inspector," which may already be open across the bottom of the Dreamweaver screen.

    • 4

Click the "Format" button and select a new format, such as "Heading 1" for the text.

    • 5

Highlight another section of text, such as a paragraph on the template. Use the formatting options in the "Property Inspector," such as changing the size, alignment or font, to edit the text.

    • 6

Select the part of the template you wish to serve as a hyperlink on the page. Click the small target icon directly to the left of the yellow file folder icon in the Property Inspector. Type the Web address to serve as the link destination or drag the target icon to a page, image or file in the Files pane on the right side of the screen. When you connect the target icon to the item in the Files pane, you'll see a line stretch between the two and the text in the template becomes blue and underlined.

    • 7

Make any other additional changes to the text template, such as substituting real dates, names and information for placeholder text boxes.

    • 8

Click the "File" menu. Select "Save As." Enter a new name for the page to protect the template from being overwritten. Press the "Save" button.
