Instructions

    • 1

Strip off excess foliage, leaves and thorns from the flower stems with a stem trimmer, scissors or a knife. Use care and wear gardening gloves to prevent cutting your hands.

    • 2

Fill the bucket with water and use the knife, stem cutter or scissors to trim the flower stems at an angle about 2 inches from the bottom. Keep the flowers in a bucket filled halfway with water or a large vase to keep them fresh as you work with them.

    • 3

Take two irises and two roses and arrange them in a square configuration. Looking at the formation clockwise, it should go iris-rose-iris-rose. This will make up the center of your bouquet.

    • 4

Hold the center square formation of flowers in place with one hand or an assistant's help, and continue adding alternating irises and roses around the square to create a dome shape.

    • 5

Secure the bouquet with floral tape or rubber bands. Tie or wrap the tape or bands around the stems of the flowers where they naturally touch, about 3 or 4 inches below the blooms. Bind the stems about 2 inches from their ends to reinforce the shape of the bouquet.

    • 6

Cut the stems to your desired length. Shake off excess water, and dry with a paper towel.

    • 7

Cut a length of ribbon 3 times as long as the flower stems in your bouquet. Tuck one end of the ribbon in the topmost rubber bands or floral tape and wind it tightly down the length of the flower stems.

    • 8

Wind the ribbon back up the flower stems once you reach the ends. Cut off any excess ribbon and tuck the cut end underneath the wrapped ribbon. Secure with pins. To make a bow, use a different length of ribbon and tie it just underneath the flower blooms. Secure it with pins to prevent it from slipping.

    • 9

Wrap the bouquet loosely in tissue or paper towels and place it in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you only have rosebuds that aren't yet ready to bloom on their own, place the stems in hot water for a minute or two. This will encourage the rosebuds to open up and bloom. Don't leave them in the hot water for too long, though, or you could kill them.
