Gel paste food coloring offers a more vivid color than liquid varieties.

When you need colored frosting for cake and cupcakes, most people reach for the tiny bottles of liquid food coloring in the back of their cabinet. The problem with liquid food coloring is that it thins out the frosting and affects the flavor. The better alternative is to use food coloring gel. A favorite among professional bakers, gel food does not thin out the frosting, and a little goes a long way. All you need is a toothpick to add gel color to your frosting. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Stick a toothpick into the gel food coloring tube, then swirl it into the frosting.

    • 2

Mix the frosting with a spatula until the gel color is thoroughly mixed.

    • 3

Stick a clean toothpick back into the gel tube, and swirl more color into the frosting if you want a deeper color. Continue to gradually add more until you reach your desired shade.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not stick a used toothpick you already stuck in the food coloring back into the gel tube. That will introduce food particles into the food coloring, causing it to go bad quickly. Always use a new toothpick each time.
