1
Create a list of study material. This list will include all items that need to be included on the flash cards. Any terminology and definitions will be completely written out on a piece of paper.
-
2
Divide the study material into categories. In this step, you want to group like items, such as verbs and nouns for a foreign language or classifications in science. Each group will be written in the same color and help you to distinguish between categories. Assign each category a color of ink and write it down so that you can reference it when you are studying.

Write the definition or answer on one side of the note card. Use the lined side of the note card and write the complete definition or answer to the term or question. Fill this out completely so that you can memorize all details of the correct answer. Teachers will sometimes use only a part of a definition on an exam and you want to make sure that you have studied the term in full.
-
4
Write the answer or term on the opposite side of the flash card. Complete the flash card by writing the corresponding answer to the definition on the unlined side of the card. Make sure that you use the same color of ink as you did on the answer side.
