Hipsters often add new words to their vocabulary.

The hipster phenomenon is beginning to take hold in the English vocabulary. When learning to speak like a hipster, you will need to learn new vocabulary. There is not a rigid way in which hipsters learn how to speak their own lingo. The process is more about staying in touch with hipster culture and going out of your way to try to look and sound like one of them.

Instructions

Befriend a hipster. Ideally, you want to fall into a hipster crowd. Like many other trends, the people who have taken part form a group together. If you want to learn hipster lingo, your best bet is to hang around a group of hipsters.

Mentally record new words you hear -- don't write things down the moment you hear them. Writing down a phrase when you hear it will not endear you to the group. Make mental notes when you hear a hipster word like "deck," which means "cool," or "fin," which means "uncool."

Try out your new words in conversations. The best way to add words to your vocabulary is to use them often. After a while you'll begin to use your new hipster vocabulary naturally.

    • 4

Stay ultra-informed about international affairs. Hipsters cherish international news. Slipping an international news story into conversation is just as important as using hipster slang when you are trying to sound like a hipster.

    • 5

Fall back on very old slang. Hipsters enjoy using terms like "groovy" and "tubular." Drop words like these into your speech as well.
