1
Wait for the KitchenAid dishwasher to reset it if it stops suddenly during use. Check the circuit breaker or fuse and reset or replace as needed and connect the power plug into an electric outlet. Latch the door firmly before use.
-
2
Turn the water valves on fully if the dishwasher has no water supply or cleaning performance is poor. Clean the spray arms with a clean cloth to remove debris or residue, and make sure the rinse aid detergent cup and soap dispenser cups are both full with fresh detergent. Push down on the overfill protection float on the floor of the dishwasher so that it slides up and down easily.

3
Clean out the air gap and the garbage disposer if the water does not drain out of the dishwasher. Find the drain hose under the sink, straighten it out to prevent obstructions and clean out the inlet screen on the hose.
-
4
Check the home water supply temperature by running hot water into a container and checking it with a candy thermometer to ensure it reaches 120 degrees Fahrenheit if dishes are spotted, dirty or have a residue. Make sure the home water pressure is between 20 and 120 psi. Remove metal pieces from the dishwasher, and pour 2 cups of white distilled vinegar into the bottom dishwasher rack. Leave the detergent cup empty and run a normal wash. Repeat with 1 to 3 tbsp. of citric acid crystals in the detergent container if the vinegar rinse is not successful. Follow with another wash cycle with detergent.

5
Remove some of the items from the dishwasher if items aren't dry or getting completely clean. Allow each dish a space and do not nest items together. Push the spray arms to make sure the arms can rotate and are not blocked by items in the racks.

6
Look for hard items that have fallen into the bottom of the tub if there is a crunching or grinding sound. Remove the object if possible, but note that the dishwasher filtration system will grind up most items over the course of a few wash cycles.
