How to Make a Second Stitch With Crochet
Crocheting utilizes a single hook to create intricate patterns with yarn or thread. Creating a second stitch in the same crochet loop is called a double crochet stitch. This stitch is longer than a single crochet stitch and creates an open, lattice-style feel to the crochet fabric. The double crochet stitch is an extremely common base stitch that is used in a wide variety of patterns. To complete this stitch, you should start with an established row of "chains" to work off of.

1
Loop the yarn over the crochet hook. The loop should come around from the right and loop over to the left. Place the new loop just over the established loop on your crochet hook from creating the chain. Keep a firm hold on the free end of the yarn to keep the new loop in place.

2
Insert the tip of your crochet hook into the third chain from the end you are working from. Push the hook into the center of the sideways "V" shape created by the chain. Only push the head of the crochet hook in about a quarter of the way.

3
Loop the free end of the yarn over the inserted crochet hook end and pull the new loop back through the chain loop to the starting side. Three loops should be sitting on your crochet hook.

4
Pull the yarn over the crochet hook from the right to the left and hold the new loop taut. Pull the hook end of the crochet needle through the middle two loops on the crochet hook, pulling the newest loop through the middle loops along with the hook. There are now two loops on the hook.

5
Pull the yarn over the crochet hook, moving from right to left once more. There should be three loops on the hook at this point. Pull the top two loops through the bottom loop on your crochet hook. Repeat these five steps to create multiple double crochet stitches. The second double crochet stitch you make should be inserted in the next opening in the base chain.
