How to Make a V-Day Necklace

A heart-shaped necklace is an inexpensive but thoughtful gift to make for Valentine's Day.

Valentine's Day is a holiday recognized worldwide as a time to show love and appreciation for the most cherished people in your life. Children between the ages of six and ten are especially fond of this day, as this demographic sends more than 650 million cards to family members, teachers, and classmates. Help your child make a charming gift this year that will warm the heart of the recipient with this simple heart-shaped necklace.

Things You'll Need

• Core wool
• Sewing needle and thread
• Red wool
• Fabric scissors
• Lace
• Felting needle
• Felting needle handles
• Red organza ribbon

Instructions

1. Use thread to tie core wool into the shape of a heart.

2. Sew red wool over the core wool heart shape. Continue this process until the red wool is tightly in place.

3. Cut a 1/2-inch incision around the heart's outline.

4. Measure the circumference of the heart and cut a piece of lace to fit around it. Gather the lace with a felting needle and insert the lace into the incision all the way around the heart. Stitch the lace to the heart to keep it in place.

5. Cut a piece of red organza ribbon to serve as the necklace. Make sure the ribbon is long enough for the necklace to rest between the recipient's sternum and stomach. Sew the ribbon to the top of the heart.
