How to Weld a Swaybar

How to Weld a Swaybar thumbnail
Welding a swaybar is used in repairs or modifications.

The swaybar is the part of the suspension system on cars used to transfer vehicle weight from right to left when driving over bumps or rough roads. In the event of swaybar damage, or if you are modifying a swaybar for racing applications, you may weld a swaybar into place. Wire-fed MIG welders can be used to weld swaybars into place. MIG welders can be purchased or rented from tool supply stores.

Instructions

  1. How to Weld a Swaybar

    • 1

Clean the area to be welded with a wire brush to remove rust and grime. Wipe away oil deposits with a shop towel.

    • 2

Use clamps to hold the swaybar in place. Ground the MIG welder by attaching the alligator clip on the ground cable to the swaybar. Turn on the MIG welder and set to the desired amperage output.

    • 3

Put on the welding helmet and insulated gloves. Allow the wire to extend 1/8-inch from the contact tube. Begin the weld by creating a weld pool. A weld pool is a puddle of melted metal that forms from the heat of the torch on the contact tube.

    • 4

Hold the contact tube at a 15-degree angle to the welding area. Drag the weld pool along the length of the repair until the weld seam is finished.

    • 5

Allow the swaybar to cool. Clean the weld with a wire brush to remove weld slag. Use a shop towel to wipe away weld splatter. The completed weld can be painted, over once cool and clean.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always weld in a ventialted area.
