How to Weld With an Electrode
Electrodes are used in arc, or stick, welding and are constructed of varying materials and chemicals depending on which metal they are being used on. Proper electrode selection is crucial in creating the correct electrical arc and making a sound weld. Depending on which metal you are welding, the correct amperage output must also be selected on the welding machine. Arc welders can either be purchased or rented from tool stores. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Use a wire brush to remove any paint or dirt from the welding area. Position the two pieces of metal you are welding and clamp together to hold them in place.
-
2
Attach the alligator clip on the ground cable of the arc welder to the work area. Turn the machine on and set to your desired amperage output.
-
-
3
Put the electrode into the alligator clip on the welding cable. Put on the welding helmet and insulated gloves.
-
4
Hold the electrode in the direction of travel at a 15-degree angle. Start a weld pool by creating an arc of electricity with the electrode. A weld pool is a puddle of melted metal that will form from the electrical arc.
-
5
Drag the weld pool along the length of the welding area. Move slowly enough so that the weld pool does not cool but fast enough that you do not create weld slag. If the completed weld has openings, you can grind the weld off with a metal grinder and begin again.
-
6
Allow the metal to cool. Clean the weld with a wire brush to remove weld splatter. Wipe clean with a shop towel.

Tips & Warnings
Practice makes perfect! Electrodes are relatively inexpensive, so practice several times on old pieces of metal to perfect your craft.
Do not weld near flammable materials.
Always weld in a ventilated area.
