How to Make a Dump Truck Cake From a Flat Sheet Cake
Dump trucks have become synonymous with building and manliness over the years. They are often a favorite play object for kids, whether inside a house moving toys to and fro, or playing with actual dirt. Creating this well-loved truck into a cake is a popular subject; however, it is usually done in 3D. Using a sheet cake to create a 2D truck not only carries the same effect as the 3D one, it also saves time and energy, for it is simpler and faster to create. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Place the sheet cake on a cake platter. Using a reference photo, cut out the side view of a dump truck from the cake. Have the front and back of the truck begin and end at the two sides of the cake's length, and allow for two semi-circles at the bottom to create the front and back wheels.

2
Insert the cake in to the freezer and allow it to chill for 20 to 30 minutes, or until it is firm when touched.

3
Remove any crumbs from the cake, as well as any loose pieces. Apply a thin layer of yellow icing as a crumb coat, sealing in any excess crumbs, and allow it to set for 10 minutes.
-
4
Fill an icing bag 1/3 full with the yellow icing, to allow a good grip on it, and attach a fine tip. Draw outlines of the yellow areas on the cake, such as the cab, hubcaps, and back end of the truck.
-
5
Attach a medium-sized tip on the icing bag and fill in the yellow areas with the icing, smoothing it, if desired, with a spatula.
-
6
Fill another icing bag 1/3 full with black icing and with clean fine tip. Pipe an outline of all the areas in black -- essentially the remainder of the un-iced areas of the cake. This includes the windows, tires, and bottom of the truck.
-
7
Place the medium tip on the black icing and fill in any outlined areas with black icing. Using the icing pen, draw the name of the person, group, or company being celebrated on the back end of the truck, like a truck company's name and information.
