How to Care for Doc Martin Boots
In the 1960s, Dr. Klaus Maertens partnered with a local shoe-making family to create an air-sole boot for hard-stomping, working-class citizens like factory workers and postal employees. Today, in 2011, Dr. Marten produces footwear in a variety of styles, from combat boots to Mary Jane's. The high-quality leather of the boots offers years of potential durability and comfort, but the longevity of leather depends on your commitment to proper care and cleaning. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Remove dirt, dust and grit from your boots by wiping a damp cloth over the leather surface. Dry the boots at room temperature, away from direct sunlight or heat, which weaken and stiffen oiled leather.
-
2
Massage leather balm into your clean, dry Dr. Martens boots using a small, dry sponge or cloth. Apply the leather balm to the entire boot, including seams and tongue, using firm, circular motions.

-
3
Let your boots absorb the balm for however long the product directions specify. Some leather balms need an entire day to absorb, and others state that five minutes is a sufficient period.
-
4
Wipe the excess balm from your Dr. Martens using a clean, dry cloth and store in a shoe box. Repeat steps one through four every few months or whenever you soil your boots with dirt or water.

Tips & Warnings
Minimize your mess by cleaning your Dr. Martens boots over newspaper on a porch or front steps.
Treat boots immediately after soiling. Languishing grit and chemicals can damage and discolor your boot leather.
Never dry your Dr. Martens with a hair dryer or in front of a heater. Air drying is the safest way to dry your boots without damaging the leather.
