How to Alter a Sweater Into a Vest
Nearly everyone has a sweater in their closet that's not a paragon of high fashion but simply an item that keeps them warm. Over time you might feel tempted to throw out that bunchy, scratchy or baggy old thing. Or with a few simple cuts and basic sewing you can turn it into a vest, transforming it into a trendy fashion statement.

1
Add 1/4 cup wool detergent to your washing machine and place the sweater inside. Wash the sweater on the hottest cycle. This will turn the texture of the fibers into a felted material. Now you can cut the sweater however you like and the edges won't unravel.

2
Dry the sweater in the dryer to remove loose or stray fibers. Lay it face up in front of you on a clean work surface. Smoothe out any wrinkles and unfold the arms on either side.

3
Cut off the arms of the sweater just before the arm seams begin. Cut off the neckband and cut the neckline to your desired style. For example, you might want a V-neck or a wider or more plunging neckline.

Thread a needle with yarn in a contrasting color. Stitch looping or blanket stitches over the edges of the neck and arms to give the sweater a finished look. Make your stitches 3/4 inch in from the edges. Knot your yarn when finished and cut away the excess.
