How to Get Your Parents to Respect You

How to Get Your Parents to Respect You thumbnail
Gain the respect of your parents through your actions.

Your parents expect different actions from you depending on what age you are. As your capacity and skills as a human being grow, so too does your role with your parents. They may need your support later in life, but when you are young, they might just need a hug. Being the type of child they want you to be could lead to them becoming the parents you want them to be.

Instructions

Brush your teeth before you go to bed and eat your vegetables. Listen to your parents when they ask you to do things like gather your toys. This is most appropriate for children aged 2 to 13.

Do your homework on time and get good grades. Help your family with chores. Tell your parents that you love them and let them know where you are when you go out. This is most appropriate for children between 13 and 18 years old.

Find employment or go to school. Start your path on your career. Find independence and discuss your life with your parents. Find out if they think you should move out on your own. This is most appropriate for children aged 18 to 25.

Find a secure job or continue your education. Call your parents and answer the phone when they call you. Visit your family during family reunions. Tell them that you love them. This is most appropriate for children aged 25 to 40.

Help your parents in whatever way they need. Now that they are seniors, they may need your expertise on important aspects of their life. For example, they may need your financial expertise on how they should spend their pensions, or they may need help building a shed in the backyard. Let them know you are there for them and that you still love them. This is most appropriate for children who are 40 and up.
