How to Remove Hydrogen Peroxide From Gray Hair

How to Remove Hydrogen Peroxide From Gray Hair thumbnail
Hydrogen peroxide is commonly used to lighten hair.

In addition to being a powerful antiseptic, hydrogen peroxide is a popular hair lightener. Unlike dyes, which are used to completely change hair color, hydrogen peroxide only brightens your current color by a few shades. The effect of the peroxide is cumulative, meaning that it is intensified after each treatment. If your hair is graying, peroxide can be used to achieve a smooth, pearly white. After the desired effect has been achieved, the peroxide should be removed from the hair promptly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse your hair thoroughly under a shower head or in a sink basin for five minutes.

    • 2

Dispense a coin-sized amount of mild shampoo in your palm and work into a lather throughout your hair.

    • 3

Remove the shampoo completely with a second, thorough rinsing.

    • 4

Apply conditioner if desired. In some cases, peroxide can temporarily dry out your follicles, but conditioner will help replenish them. Allow the conditioner to penetrate your hair for the time suggested on the container.

    • 5

Rinse out the conditioner completely and pat your hair dry with a soft towel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before gauging the effect of the peroxide, allow your hair to dry completely.

  • Never use any abrasive chemical, such as chlorine bleach or ammonia, to lighten your hair.

  • Keep children and pets away from your open bottle of hydrogen peroxide.
