How to Make Bologna Curls With Fabric Strips

Before there were curling irons, hot rollers or even brush curlers, women curled their hair using strips of cotton rags. This ingenious method creates big, soft curls overnight without you having to sleep on uncomfortable brush or sponge rollers. Go for a retro or goth look with large bologna curls created overnight with strips of fabric. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut cotton fabric into strips about 1 inch by 6 inches. The exact size doesn't matter as long as the measurements are close to those dimensions. The number of strips you will need depends on the amount of hair you have. Make a pile of 30 or 40 to make sure you have enough.

    • 2

Wash your hair and towel it dry. Comb out your hair straight with an even part in the middle or at the side.

    • 3

Separate your hair into sections of about 1 inch wide. Each section will combine to create one very thick curl at the side or back of your head.

    • 4

Grasp the first section at one side of your head. Comb it together and hold it out at the side of your head, parallel to the ground. Lay one rag over the top of the end of the hair section so that an even amount of fabric sticks out from each side of the hair ends.

    • 5

Roll your hair upward with the rag in the middle, just like you would roll it if you placed a curler at the end of the hair section. When you get to the scalp and can't roll the hair any further, tie both fabric ends into a double knot.

    • 6

Grasp the next 1-inch section of hair and roll it up in a rag. Continue on around your head until you have curls wrapped and tied all the way around your head.

    • 7

Allow your hair to dry naturally overnight. If you are in a rush you can dry your hair with a blow dryer, but the curls won't be as strong and will fall out sooner. When your hair is completely dry, untie each rag and gently unroll the curl around your forefinger. Hold your finger up with all the hair wrapped around it, then gently slip your finger out the bottom of the curls, allow the bologna curl to lengthen and hang to your shoulder. Arrange all the curls this way around your head.

Tips & Warnings

  • Spray the bologna curls with a strong holding hair spray to keep them in place for the longest period of time.

  • Recycle old sheets, pillowcases or cotton shirts for a frugal way to make the fabric strips.
