Open corked wine bottles with a spiral corkscrew.

A spiral corkscrew is a tool for removing a cork stopper from a wine bottle. Spiral corkscrews are a common item in most households that enjoy wine as well as in the food industry. You twist the metal spiral on the corkscrew into the cork as far as it will go and then remove it using leverage of some kind. Corkscrews come in a variety of leverage options. Most frequently there is a folding metal piece that braces against the bottles edge, or there are rabbit ears that push down and force the cork up. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Folding Corkscrew

    • 1

Unfold the metal spiral and metal brace, or handle. It should look like a "T" with the spiral pointing down in the center. The spiral is sometimes called a "worm" in the food industry.

    • 2

Center the sharp point of the spiral over the cork and apply pressure. Twist and push down until the spiral is embedded in the cork as far as it will go. The hooked edge of the metal brace will line up with bottle lip as the spiral goes in.

    • 3

Pull up and twist back and forth slightly to remove the cork. Keep the metal brace against the bottle as long as possible to use as a lever.

    • 4

Twist the cork gently back and forth to remove it completely, once the lever is too high to reach the bottle lip. Remove the cork by twisting it off of the metal spiral.

    Rabbit Ear Corkscrew

    • 5

Center the sharp point of the spiral over the cork and apply pressure. Twist and push down on the center handle until the spiral is embedded in the cork as far as it will go. There is often a metal ring around the spiral that fits down over the neck of the bottle as the spiral goes in. As the spiral embeds in the cork, the rabbit ear handles will raise up slowly. This is the leverage for removing the cork.

    • 6

Push down on the rabbit ear handles, giving equal, gentle pressure on both sides. As you push down, the cork will slowly come out of the bottle, almost completely. Twist the cork back and forth gently to remove the cork.

    • 7

Hold the metal ring with one hand and twist the center handle the opposite direction to remove the cork.
