How to Work a Husky

Huskies learn best with positive reinforcement.

Siberian huskies are eager, intelligent dogs that want to please, so positive reinforcement is key in their training and work program. This breed requires lots of activity -- daily exercise is a must. The husky needs an alpha owner who demonstrates leadership gently but consistently with praise and rewards.

Instructions

    • 1

Start early, when your husky is a puppy, with simple obedience commands such as "sit," "down," and "fetch." Keep your commands short and clear, and reward the dog with a treat when it responds correctly. Don't scold when the dog makes a mistake. Huskies are sensitive and respond poorly to negative reinforcement. Begin again and praise when the desired behavior is accomplished.

    • 2

Keep work sessions short. Huskies are a working breed and have high endurance but long work sessions result in lost focus and mistakes which are frustrating to both the trainer and the dog. Stop when a successful command is accomplished, even if it's a simple one. Don't end a work session on a bad note.

    • 3

Vary the program. Alternate work sessions with play that allows the dog plenty of running or free time in a fenced area. Huskies have abundant energy and are better behaved when regularly exercised. Make exercise fun with games of fetch and ball-throwing.

    • 4

Praise the dog whenever it performs a good behavior, such as returning the ball to you. Add a treat when a new behavior is performed or one that you want to reinforce. Use high-value treats for work sessions.

Build on your husky's training as behaviors are accomplished. Introduce new tasks gradually, such as pulling a sled or therapy work. Huskies love learning and enjoy new challenges.
