A stucco business owner can work on residential and business sites.

Many homeowners and businesses want to add stucco to their walls, but do not know how to apply it themselves. If you have a knack for general contracting work, and experience working with stucco, you can build a business that caters to these individuals. Opening a new stucco business has advantages because you'll get to work with your hands while running your own business, but it takes proper training and planning to create a successful enterprise.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain training in stucco application. Take courses at a community college or technical college on stucco application and general contracting. Apply for an apprenticeship job working with a master stucco contractor. Work with the contractor for two or more years to gain hands-on experience.

    • 2

Design a business plan for your stucco business. Decide whether you will focus on installing new stucco, repairing existing stucco or both. Determine whether you will have a separate office or work from a home office, and if you will hire other contractors or office staff. Include a list of start-up costs, such as securing an office building, purchasing supplies and advertising.

    • 3

Apply for a contractor's license. You can obtain an application for a license at the department of licensing and regulation in your area. Complete the application, which includes information on your business and formal training, pay any required application fee and wait for approval.

    • 4

Apply for a business license, which allows you to legally operate your business in your area. Application requirements vary by state. You can get information on requirements, and pick up an application, at your local department of licenses and inspections office.

    • 5

Purchase business liability insurance. This insurance will protect you if a client or worker has an injury on a job site, or you accidentally damage a client's home or office.

    • 6

Purchase the materials you need to build or repair stucco. You will need a truck to move equipment, stucco mixers, and paint brushes or sponges. Purchase the supplies for repairing or replacing stucco such as stucco mix, pigment for altering the color and applicators.

    • 7

Advertise your business to draw in clients. Create a website showcasing your business and contact information. Create fliers and pass them out in your area. You can also purchase advertising spots on TV or on radio broadcasts.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ensure you have the proper licenses in place before working with clients.
