Instructions

    • 1

Decide which model airplane kit you would like to work on. Choose a style based on your interests or based on a style that appeals to you. Purchase model kits at a local toy or hobby shop, online, or at a department store.

    • 2

Read the instructions carefully. Locate the major parts in the box and make note of the building sequence. Purchase the recommended paint colors, or choose your preferred colors for your project.

    • 3

Wash the parts of your model thoroughly before beginning construction. Place the plastic bars to which the parts are attached -- known as sprues -- into a shallow pan filled with soapy water and let soak for a few minutes. Rub the larger pieces gently with your fingers. Rinse and air dry the parts on a paper towel.

    • 4

Remove the model kit pieces from the sprue. Use a hobby knife to gently make nicks close to the parts, and gently squeeze the parts away from the sprue by hand. For thicker attachments use cutting pliers to remove the parts.

    • 5

Take all the pieces apart and paint each piece separately. Start with the smaller pieces that go into the interior of the plane, then paint the larger exterior pieces. Allow the pieces to air dry for a day or two, being careful not to smudge or disturb the pieces during the drying process.

    • 6

Locate the proper position for the pieces in the instruction and glue the pieces accordingly. Glue the cockpit pieces into the interior. Assemble the engine and place it in the proper place. Assemble the rest of the outside of the plane, holding the pieces in position for a few seconds to set the glue bond.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to use an appropriate amount of glue when piecing the parts together. Too much glue or not enough glue will cause your model to be poorly constructed and fall apart.
