Kids love theme parties, especially on their birthdays. As the parent of a soccer fan or player you might consider turning your child's next birthday into a soccer themed bash. One of the most creative and fun ways you can plan a soccer theme party is to make a soccer field birthday cake for your child and his friends to enjoy; professional cakes are nice but often expensive.   Bake a cake in a rectangular pan. You can make a cake from scratch or you can make one straight from a box in the baking section of your nearest grocery store. Once the cake finishes baking, you need to let it cool completely before removing it from the pan onto a cake dish.

  Place two or three drops of green food coloring into white frosting; leave the frosting in the container or scoop it into a bowl to mix it. Add additional food coloring one drop at a time until you achieve the color green you are looking for.

  Spread the green frosting over the entire cake -- top and sides -- until it is smooth.

  Use a pastry decorating bag full of white icing or a store-bought container of white writing icing -- found in the cake decorating aisle of any grocery store -- to decorate the soccer field cake. Outline the entire top of the cake with a thin white line.

  Draw goals at each short end of the rectangular shaped cake. To do this, start drawing a straight line about 1 1/2 inches from the edge of the cake and touching the original outline you drew. Round it out after about 2 inches and continue straight across, again rounding it out and bringing it to the bottom of the cake 1 1/2 inches from the other edge of the cake. Do this on both ends of the cake.

  Starting on a long side of the rectangle, draw a straight line directly across the middle of the cake, from the top to the bottom. Make a big circle in the middle of the cake so that it centers on the straight line. From this point on, the rest of the decorating is up to you; write a happy birthday message to your child or find little action figures of soccer players to place strategically on the soccer field cake.
