When you cook with a slow cooker, you can place all of your ingredients inside, turn the slow cooker on and forget about it for several hours. Many different things can be cooked in a slow cooker, including chicken. However, when cooking meat in a slow cooker, it is sometimes difficult to know when it is done cooking. This is especially important when you are working with poultry, as eating undercooked chicken can be deadly. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Whole chicken
  • Slow cooker
  • Meat thermometer
  • Water or chicken stock
  • Vegetables, seasonings and other ingredients, dependent on recipe

Instructions

      Season your chicken according to the directions on the recipe you are using.

      Place your vegetables or other ingredients inside the slow cooker. Place the chicken on top and add the liquid you are using such as water or chicken stock.

      Place the lid on the slow cooker and turn it on. If you cook the chicken on low, cook it for about 7 1/2 hours if you are using a 6-lb. chicken. If you choose to cook it on high, cook the chicken for about 6 1/4 hours. Cook the chicken for a shorter or longer time depending on the weight of the chicken you chose.

      Insert a meat thermometer into your chicken. Make sure it has cooked to an internal temperature of 165 F before removing it from the slow cooker and serving it.
