How to Make Decorative Fringe on a Knitted Scarf

Use a crochet hook to add fringe to a knitted scarf.

Finish the ends of a knitted scarf with a flair by adding a decorative yarn fringe. Make a fringe out of the same yarn you used for the scarf or use another color to give the scarf character. Novelty yarns such as ribbon, metallics and fun fur are festive fringe choices that can jazz up a subdued scarf. Adding colorful fringe to your scarf increases its length and allows you to wear it with a wider variety of outfits.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a crochet hook that is the same size as the needles you used to knit your scarf. For example, worsted-weight yarn is often knitted with a size 8 needle, and the corresponding crochet hook size is H. Using the same size hook as needles ensures that the hook will fit through the edge stitches of the scarf.

    • 2

Cut four 12-inch sections of yarn for each of the edge stitches of your scarf. For example, if you cast on 10 stitches when you knitted your scarf, you would need 40 12-inch strands of yarn. Use more for thicker fringe, less for thinner fringe.

    • 3

Hold four strands of yarn together so that the ends line up and fold the strands in the middle. You will have eight strands of yarn hanging below the fold.

    • 4

Insert the crochet hook through the first stitch on the bottom edge of the scarf. Lay the fold of the yarn strands across the hooked end. Pull the hook back through the stitch to bring the fold through to the other side. The fold should stick out of the stitch by approximately 1 inch.

    • 5

Gather the ends of the strands together and pull them through the fold. Pull on the ends to tighten the knot against the scarf.

    • 6

Repeat with each stitch across the bottom of the scarf. Turn the scarf and repeat with the other edge.
