Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) technology deploys the properties of polarized light. This technology has made rapid progress. However, there are some drawbacks such as “ghosting” and “almost-perpendicular-viewing-angle." The comparison between Plasma TV and LCDs is difficult, especially because of the choices available. Here are a few guidelines on comparing LCD TVs.

From Quick Guide: Buy a New TV
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check the reputation of the company offering LCD TV models on the basis of the number of years it has been in the market and the customer feedback.

  2. Step 2

Compare the array of screen sizes available for different companies.

  3. Step 3

Consider the screen sizes for LCDs. Determine the aspect ratio of the model you are choosing. Either you can have the width to height ratio 16:9 or 4:3. Good companies take care that the stretching is from the ends and not from the center where the focus of the viewer lies. The picture quality is often distorted in an LCD but the stretching technology has been largely successful in keeping the viewer unaware.

  4. Step 4

Check the viewing angle of various models. Ideally the range should lie between 150 and 170 degrees.

  5. Step 5

Compare the durability of the model. The best way is to check for a warranty, which comes with every LCD TV purchase.

  6. Step 6

Evaluate the static images resistance. LCDs are also subject to burn-ins due to static images. Every manufacturer is now working on advanced options for dealing with this problem. Compare LCD TVs against this technological drawback.

  7. Step 7

Consider customization and scalability. With some LCD TVs, it may be possible to enhance the viewing experience by connecting it to external speakers, amplifiers and also computers. See how much scalable and plug-in options the LCD TV provides.

Tips & Warnings
  • Compare models for picture quality. Screen size has the highest impact. Having a larger screen size may lead to unclear pictures and dots on the screen due to magnification of pixels.
  • Pick models with user-friendly remote controls.
  • Colors may appear faded for models with screen sizes larger than 37 inches due to difficulty in distribution of light.
  • Reputed brands should be highly considered for more durability. Aging of bulb leads to reddening of image with less reliable brands.
