Things You'll Need:
- Woolite or lerak solution
- Steam iron
-
Step 1
Batik can be washed in the washing machine. Use a cleaning agent such as Woolite because it is designed for delicates. The Indonesian people use a fruit called lerak fruit as their cleaning agent. It can be purchased at any Indonesian market. Set the washing machine setting to warm water, then start the machine. Add the Woolite or fruit cleaning agent to the water. Then place the fabric inside the washing machine. Hand washing can also be done. Just hand wash the fabric in the sink instead of a washing machine. Use the Woolite or fruit cleaner in the sink water and carefully rub the material together to remove dirt and grime. Be gentle with the fabric when squeezing out water.

Step 2
Take the batik out of the washer and hang it to dry in a shady area. Do not put the fabric in the dryer, near heat or directly in the sunshine. These elements can cause fading in the color. The fabric is dipped in wax during the handcrafted process and the heat can cause it to melt and the color to fade.

Step 3
If ironing is needed, use a steam press. Direct heat from an iron can cause fading and blending of the colors that will destroy the intricate patterns of the batik.
