Staying in fashion requires effort. Sometimes you need to go beyond what's hanging on a rack if you want to dress to impress. Designing your own dress shirt can make you look good and feel good. There are a number of online retailers ready to customize a shirt for you. Unlike t-shirts, these dress shirts require more than just a standard size.   1. How to properly measure yourself

      Measure your neck by wrapping the tape around your throat behind where your collar button would be. Write the number down and mark it as "neck size."

      Wrap the tape across your sternum and under your armpits. This will measure the fullest part of your chest. Do not puff your chest out, and hold the tape against your skin so it does not slip below your chest muscles. Write the number down and mark it as your "chest size."

      Measure the distance between your left shoulder and right shoulder. The tape should run across your back and behind your neck, not along your chest and throat. Write the measurement down and mark it as "shoulder width."

      Run the tape from the top of your right shoulder to the ball of your thumb on your right hand. Write the number down and mark as "right sleeve." Do the same for your left arm and mark it as "left sleeve."

      Wrap the tape around the thickest part of your bicep muscle on your right arm. Write the measurement down as "right bicep." Do the same for your left bicep, and record that measurement also.

      Wrap the tape around your left or right wrist and record the measurement as "wrist." You only need to measure one wrist.

      Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your waist below your ribs. Make sure to breathe normally and keep the tape snug against your body. Record the measurement as "jacket waist."

      Wrap the tape around the biggest part of your hips and buttocks. Record the measurement as "hip/seat."

      Visit a participating retailer's website.

      Choose the fabric pattern you want. They vary in design, material and price. The fabric pattern usually dictates the base price of your shirt, and it can cost anywhere between $75 to $140, depending on the retailer.

      Select your collar and cuff design. Collar designs include button down, straight, Windsor and varsity, among others. Some companies offer specific cuff designs for barrel or French-style cuffs, and may also give you the option to choose the button color for your collar.
