How to Get an Independent Tutoring Job

How to Get an Independent Tutoring Job thumbnail
Independent tutors work for an agency but are paid with a 1099.

A job tutoring primary, middle, secondary, and higher education students provides flexibility and the ability to work as an independent contractor. At first, the term "independent contractor" may seem like a scary concept, but it only means that the company doesn't pay employment tax for paying you. Finding a job as an independent tutor is similar to other job searches, only requiring you to look for specific language when applying for the job.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify three to five companies that hire independent tutors in your area or on the Web. The company Web site or application paper must say that the company pays employees with a 1099, the name of the form used to pay independent employees, instead of a W-2.

    • 2

Develop an area of expertise. This includes more than just being able to teach a certain subject. Tutors can also specialize in teaching special needs children, specialized tests such as the ACT and SA,T and other subjects related to education.

    • 3

Meet the qualifications. Many companies require at least a bachelor's degree and prefer prior tutoring experience.

    • 4

Submit an application to each job prospect with all appropriate paperwork, including a resume and cover letter. Follow up 24 hours later to make sure the company received your application. Call three days after that to see if you should do anything else.
