Instructions

    • 1

Select two pieces of fabric to make your pinwheel flower. Choose a solid and print, two solids or two coordinating prints of your choice. Determine the size for your finished flower and cut the two pieces into squares of that size, trimming any stray threads from the edges.

    • 2

Place one fabric right side down on your work surface. Spray the entire surface of the fabric with fabric adhesive.

    • 3

Lay the second piece of fabric, right side up, on top of the first. Allow drying time, according to can instructions.

    • 4

Trim the fabric to create a perfect square using fabric shears. Use a T-square or marked cutting board as a guide, if needed, and cut with a rotary cutter if available.

    • 5

Mark the center of the square. Determine which fabric will be the back of the flower. Place a ruler or yardstick diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner on the back and draw a line with a pencil. Do the same with the other two corners and mark the point where they cross to create an "X". Mark two inches from the center point on each of the four lines.

    • 6

Cut along the line from one point of the square stopping at the two-inch mark. Repeat for the other three lines.

    • 7

Thread the needle with coordinating thread and knot. Insert the needle into the center back of the square. Leave the needle coming through but do not pull it all the way through.

    • 8

Bend one point, on the front of the square, toward the center. Insert the needle into the point. Repeat for each of the other three points of fabric, catching each one with the needle. Once all of the corners are on the needle, insert the needle into one hole in the button. Pull the needle through, pulling the button and four points into the center of the fabric.

    • 9

Place the needle back into the other hole of the button and through all four points to the back of the fabric. Make a few more stitches back and forth through all points and the button to secure the button and hold the pinwheel together. Knot the thread in the back and cut.

    • 10

Mount the flower on the surface of your choice using hot glue.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make two different-sized pinwheels and attach one to the other for more depth and petals.

  • As an alternative to gluing the fabrics together, stitch wrong sides together on a sewing machine, leaving a small opening to turn. Then, turn the piece and hand stitch the opening closed.

  • Instead of buttons, stitch the pinwheel closed and then stitch or glue on three beads to resemble the center of a flower.
