How to Crochet Beanie Hats With Flowers

Beanies may also be called winter hats or stocking caps.

Crocheting an adult-size beanie is an inexpensive project, well-suited to beginners. Mastery of only four basic stitches is required to make the beanie, the chain (Ch), slipstitch (Sl st) and single crochet. (Sc). No joinery is required, as the cap is constructed in a single piece. The flower also uses the treble (Tr) and double-treble (D Tr) stitches. Make beanies to use up leftover partial skeins of yarn. The beanie begins as a small circle that is worked in spirals so there is no visible seam. A crocheted flower is handstitched to the beanie for a finishing decorative touch.

• Contrasting color yarn
• Stitch markers
• Crochet hook
• Large safety pin
• Tapestry needle

Instructions

Hat

1. Ch 4, join with Sl st to form a ring. Sc 6 in the ring. Mark the last stitch of the ring (first row) with a stitch marker. Do not join. In round 2, do 2 Sc in each sc of the first round. Mark the ends of each or the rounds as they are completed.

2. Round 3: Do *1 Sc in first Sc, 2 Sc in next Sc; repeat from * around. Round 4: Do *1 Sc in 2sc, 2sc in next Sc; repeat from * around. Round 5: *2 Sc in first sc, 1 Sc in next 3 Sc; repeat from * around. Round 6: *1 Sc in 4 Sc, 2 Sc in next Sc; repeat from * around.

   Round 7: *2 Sc in first Sc, 1 Sc in next 5 Sc; repeat from *around. Round 8: *1 Sc in 6 Sc, 2 Sc in next Sc; repeat from * around. In rounds 9 through 13, Continue this pattern, increasing the number of Sc by one between stitches requiring 2 Sc.

3. Round 14: Do 1 Sc in each stitch from the previous round until the cap reaches the desired length. In the final round, Sl st around the entire opening.

Flower

1. Ch 4. Join with Sl st to form a ring. Ch 2 (counts as first Dc). I round 1, work 14 Dc into the ring, Sl st to top of beginning chain.

2. Round 2; *Ch 4, skip 2 Dc, Sl st into next Dc. Repeat from * 4 more times, working your way around the ring. The final Sl st is worked into the base of beginning chain.Round 3: in each Ch 4 space work 1Dc, 4 Rr ,1 Db tr, 4 Tr, 1 Dc. Join the last stitch with a sl st to the first dc.

3. Position the flower on the outside of the hat. Pin it in place on the outside, using a large safety pin. Use a tapestry needle and matching yarn to handstitch the flower to the hat from the inside.
