How to Save From Photoshop CS4 to Be Compatible With CS3
Adobe released Photoshop CS4 in October 2008 with a new feature set, including 3D image support and better performance with large image files. Photoshop files contain information such as layers and masks that make up the structure of your image, and Photoshop's PSD format preserves this information. If you save your image in another file format, you may lose full control over future edits; however, the PSD format is backwards compatible with earlier versions such as Photoshop CS3.
