In 'Grand Theft Auto IV,' How to Get Independence Radio to Work

"Grand Theft Auto IV" is a third-person action game available on the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game features different radio stations within the game that players can listen to while playing. The Independence FM station is exclusive to the PC version of the game, however. By tuning in to Independence FM, you can listen to MP3 music files on your hard drive. To get this to work, you have to place the files in the correct folder for the game to read them.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to the "User Music" folder on your hard drive and copy the music tracks you want to hear in the game to it. Files can be in MP3 or WMA format, but copyrighted tracks will not work. The "User Music" folder can be found in the "My Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA IV" folder.

    • 2

Start the game. Enter the "Options Menu" and select "Audio Options." Select the "Complete Scan" option. The game will scan the "User Music" folder and add all the tracks it finds to the Independence FM radio station.

    • 3

Select "Play Modes" under "Audio Options" and choose how you want the radio station to play your songs. "Sequential" will play through all the songs in order, while "Shuffle" plays the songs randomly. "Radio" plays random advertisements and adds a DJ for a more authentic experience.

Close the "Options" menu and return to the game. Enter any vehicle, then scroll to "Independence FM" by using your mouse scroll wheel. If you are playing with a game pad, press "Left" on the pad to cycle through the stations. Your custom music will start playing once you have selected the station.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of copying the music files to the "User Music" folder, you can copy the "Shortcuts" instead. This has the same effect as copying the songs without taking up additional space on your hard drive. To do this, copy the tracks, then right click in the "User Music" folder and select "Paste Shortcut" instead of "Paste."
