How to Carve a Watermelon Headdress
While watermelon helmets are quite common, more elaborate headdresses made from the fruit is a fun alternative. The hat does not need to fully cover the face, and can be intricately carved with designs to create a memorable headpiece. This is perfect for tropical-themed parties and Halloween costumes.

1
Place the watermeon on an easy-to-clean work surface, as the watermelon juice leaks when cut. Place a bowl beside it.
-
2
Cut the watermelon in half, creating a dome shape on either side. Reserve one half for another hat, or for eating.
-
-
3
Cut the pink flesh of the watermelon in to 1-inch squares, inserting the knife in the middle of the watermelon, only until it reaches white. Do this throughout the entire flesh, creating lines one way, then others perpendicular. This makes it easier to remove the melon.
-
4
Insert a spoon on one side of the melon, where the white meets the pink flesh. Scrape it down along the white flesh, pulling out lengths of the pink flesh as you go. Place them in the large bowl.
-
5
Continue the scraping-out process until all the pink flesh is removed, and only white and green remains. Discard the pink flesh or enjoy it with friends and family as a snack.
-
6
Carve the edge of the watermelon on a curved diagonal, shaping it to fit around the top of your forehead, and either covering or exposing your ears, whichever you desire.
-
7
Place a printed pattern on the back and sides of the watermelon, or create one freehand by drawing with a pencil, and poke out guidelines with a toothpic.
-
8
Scrape away the green flesh to reveal the whilte part underneath, and create texture and designs in the headdress. Continue this until it is carved as you desire.
-
9
Allow the watermelon to dry for one day, or until it can be fitted on your head without releasing water. Use within a week.
