Getting car insurance in your name with only a learner’s permit is not an easy task. High-profile insurance companies may not insure someone with a learner's permit. Insurance laws and eligibilty criteria vary from state to state. As a result, there is no guarantee that you will get insurance in your name if you have a learner's permit. Some companies, however, will insure you with a learner's permit if you are over 16 years old. Often, they will have stringent requirements and will charge higher rates. The best way to explore your options is to follow the steps below.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose a companion with a stable driving record. Buying a policy with him or her can save you money.
  • Have your insurance coverage added to your parent's or guardian's policy. You are more likely to get insurance this way. Too, this option is significantly cheaper.
  • Do not drive a sports car. Choose cars that are deemed less dangerous and more stable.
  • A good academic record may get you a reduced rate.
  • Make sure that you buy a policy with someone who will accompany you whenever and wherever you drive. In event of an accident, you might face serious consequences if the person sharing your policy is not present in the car.
