How to Remove a Kitchen Faucet When a Plumber's Wrench Doesn't Work

A plumber's wrench is an adjustable wrench used to loosen nuts and pipe joints. The jaws of the wrench are attached to a straight handle that can make the wrench difficult to use in tight places. If the plumber's wrench will not loosen a kitchen faucet's mounting hardware, you can switch to a basin wrench. The jaws of the basin wrench are perpendicular to the handle, so you can remove nuts in hard-to-reach places.

Instructions

1. Open the basin wrench as wide as it will go. Lift the basin wrench up to the nut holding the kitchen faucet in place.

2. Close the basin wrench jaws around the nut. Turn the handle to the left to loosen the nut until you can unscrew it the rest of the way with your hand.

3. Loosen any other nuts holding the faucet in place, using the basin wrench. Some faucets have just one, some have three. Remove the nuts, then pull the faucet out of the holes in the sink.

Tips & Warnings

• Before you install a new faucet, scrub the area with a damp sponge to remove any dried plumber's putty.
